We need to understand that personal reasons can take over people & that is why it is important to handle any attritions or escalations around it very carefully.
I will share an anecdote. There was an employee who was not ready to take the feedback of the mediocre level of work he was doing from the past few months. In his mind his personal problems overpowered & he started miscalculating that he was doing more than required for the project.
I first tried understanding his problem & helped him bridge the gap between personal & professional life. And then subtle intervention was done to help him realise his illusion around his productivity. That really helped to solve the problem instead of accusing him of being arrogant.
